2024: A Year of Growth & Milestones
This year, 9Trees has grown more than just woodlands—we’ve grown partnerships, received awards, and connected with our community in ways we never imagined.
Our Impact
5 Years of Planting for a Biodiverse Tomorrow
By the end of December 2023, we planted 14,875 trees across the UK—each one making a real difference in local ecosystems, fighting climate change, and restoring biodiversity. From our site surveys, we’ve had a 25% increase in biodiversity year on year.
At our Drover’s Nest site, we were thrilled to spot a family of six stoats, along with field mice, hares, and voles in the fields. Overhead, kestrels, buzzards, and red kites soared, while owl pellets hinted at their presence nearby. We also observed bumblebees, butterflies, moths, and smaller birds like the willow warbler, meadow pipit, and chaffinch, making it a truly biodiverse haven. Read more here.
During our Director Yzzy’s summer visit to Franklin Wood, she observed signs of field mice entering the site, two species of butterflies fluttering around—a delightful sight in a year of low butterfly numbers—and a red kite gracefully hovering above in search of food.
And we’re not stopping. With YOUR SUPPORT, we aim to double the number of trees planted over the next 5 years and provide a big boost to UK’s biodiversity!

The Future
Doubling Down on Tree Planting
Our woodlands are flourishing, mainly in the southwest of the UK. But to truly make an impact, we need to expand—doubling the trees we’ve planted in the southwest while matching that growth in the southeast. It’s ambitious, but this is what our planet needs—and it’s what ensures future generations inherit thriving ecosystems.
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 year ago. The next best time is now.”
- Chinese proverb
Words From Our Directors
“Our vision is to ‘grow small, grow beautiful,’ inspired by Satish Kumar — focusing on managing our existing sites for exceptional biodiversity, doubling tree cover in the South West in partnership with conservation allies, and expanding our collaboration with universities.”
— Mike Cunningham, Managing Director
“Over the next five years, we’re growing bigger, better, and bolder—expanding tree cover, enhancing our impact, and taking bold strides to reach more of the UK.”
— Yzzy, Director Operations
