The long term vision for the site, management objectives and ecological survey all helps shape the final management plan for each site.
Methods
The following management is proposed at (name of woodland).
Short-term (0-5 years):
Establish a community friends group to assist with tree checks and woodland management.
Green team away days - work with local businesses
eco-matting/mulching every year for 3-5 years
Plant in additional understory trees, shrubs
Pest control
Access checks
Fencing / gate checks
Frequent Tree checks (annual in Years 1-3).
Replace dead trees
Drone capture of tree locations - geolocation
Install & manage nest boxes on surrounding trees.
Grass cutting between trees every 3 years
Ecological survey of site - compare to first survey
Establish ride cutting - alternate ride edge cutting every year - left hand side then right hand side the year after
glade management - cutting to maintain space - yearly to year 5
Medium-term (5-25 years):
Occasional Tree checks.
Remove tree guards.
Coppicing approx. 6 hazel within a small area in the southwest of the site.
Install & manage bird nest boxes on woodland trees.
Fix, replace or remove fencing
Continue ride cutting
Glade management cutting - every 3 years - allow bramble establishment and cut on rotation to create structure and open spaces for insects/butterflies and nesting birds
Long-term (25 - 50 years):
occasional tree checks
remove tree guards if not already removed
Fix, replace or remove fencing
Allow grazing animals on site
Coppice rotation established
Thinning if appropriate and with felling licence - to widen rides, ensure pond is not shaded
Site restrictions or considerations: (different for every site)
Only plant/replace trees using species from the original planting plan.
If badger setts are present on site, avoid disturbance. No mechanical machinery within 30m.
No public access on site, all works to be completed by the Landowner.
